TENNESSEE 'KEEPER JULIE ECKEL TABBED WEEK-10 TOP PRIMETIME PLAYER
Lady Vols sophomore joined by 17 others on CS360 Primetime Performers Honor Roll for Oct 15-21.
Tennessee sophomore goalkeeper Julie Eckel (Cordova, Tenn.) – who rose to the occasion with a career-best, 11-save shutout while playing at one of college soccer's toughest venues (Texas A&M's Ellis Field) – has been selected for the top honor among the week-10 CS360 Primetime Performers of the Week for Division I women's soccer, as selected by CollegeSoccer360.com. Eckel is the CS360 National Primetime Player of the Week for Oct. 15-21 and is joined by 17 others in forming the Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll for the 10th week of the 2012 season (see below for complete list of the week-10 honorees).
Eckel's busy weekend in a pair of challenging road games included seeing the potent Aggies (cs360 #10) and #38 Mississippi rack up 32 total shots – with the Lady Vols 'keeper saving 15-of-16 shots that were placed on frame. Her lone goal allowed during the weekend came during an always-dangerous corner-kick sequence, but Eckel successfully defensed 12 other corner kicks spanning the two wins (1-0 vs A&M; 2-1 comeback vs. Ole Miss). Both results helped set up an exciting final-week push for postseason positioning within the Southeastern Conference. Florida (10-2-0) still owns the best SEC record while A&M's loss to Tennessee kept the Aggies (9-2-1) from moving back atop the SEC and also gives the Lady Vols (8-3-1) a chance to finish tied with A&M and earn the #2 spot in the overall SEC standings.
After proving herself in front of nearly 2,500 fans at Texas A&M (23 shots, 11 saves, 10 CKs defensed in 1-0 shutout), Eckel allowed the early corner-kick goal at Ole Miss before standing firm by shutting out the Rebels during the final 82 minutes (four total saves) – in a game that was a tense 1-1 battle until the 80th minute, when freshman Hannah Wilkinson delivered her second game-winnning goal of the weekend.
Headshots of all 18 honorees are included in the right-sidebar, with action photos below (player info. to be added below, later).
... Selection for the Division I women's CS360 weekly awards is based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):
• Performed at a high level in a game that is key to the team's postseason qualification (or conference title), typically in a game involving a top-50 team from the CS360 Composite National Rankings (or in a game involving a conference favorite/leader from a league not represented in the CS360 top-50).
• In general, preference is given based on the quality of the opponent, contribution to team success and other situational factors involved in the player's accomplishments.
• Exhibited strong leadership and/or involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, late scores, momentum-shifting play, all-around performance, team spirit, etc.
• Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
• Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from team's home field and/or against a traditional rival.
