Five players set to compete in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship round-of-16 have been named to the official Academic All-America team for 2010 Division I women's soccer, as selected/awarded by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) and sponsored by ESPN.
Christen Press (Stanford)
The six Academic All-Americans from teams still in the running for the 2010 national title include three from top-ranked and unbeaten Stanford (the '09 runner-up): senior forward Christen Press (Palos Verdes, Calif.), junior midfielder Teresa Noyola (Palo Alto, Calif.) and senior goalkeeper Kira Maker (Potomac. Md.). Press – who caries a 3.61 cumulative GPA as a communications – was one of 11 players to receive first team Academic All-America honors while Noyola (3.59; math/computer science) and Maker (3.97; human biology) were third-team selections. Make has served primarily in a backup role this season but was a regular starter earlier in her career.
Krista Lopez (Oklahoma State)
Two other first team Academic All-American hail from current NCAA round-of-16 teams: Notre Dame versatile senior center back Lauren Fowlkes (Lee's Summit, Mo.; 3.86; science/business) and Oklahoma State junior forward Krista Lopez (Carrollton, Texas; 4.00; management/accounting).
Stanford joins fellow west-coast power Portland as the teams with the most selections (3) among the 33 Academic All-America selections. Pilots veteran Jessica Tsao (Portland, Ore.; 3.97; biology) was named to the first team, while her fellow senior defender Elli Reed (Park City, Utah; 3.71; sociology) was a second-teamer and junior forward Danielle Foxhoven (Littleton, Colo.; 3.42; business) a third-team selection.
Jessica Tsao (Portland)
Five of the 33 Academic All-Americans for 2010 – including Tsao and Foxhoven (both 1st teamers in '09) – had received the prestigious honor previously in their careers (Fowlkes was named to the second team in '09).
In addition to Stanford and Portland, Hofstra also had multiple players named 2010 Academic All-Americans (both 1st-teamers): senior midfielder Tiffany Yovino (Holtsville, N.Y.; 3.74; history/early-childhood education) and senior defender Dana Bergstrom (Billerica, Mass.; 4.00; exercise science).
Mollie Patton (South Carolina)
Nearly two-thirds of the All-Americans (20 of 33) played for teams that qualified for the 2010 NCAAs. In addition to the 10 players mentioned above, the other honorees from 2010 NCAA qualifiers include three more 1st teamers – South Carolina grad.-student goalkeeper Mollie Patton (Milford, Ohio; 3.80; pharmacy doctorate), Auburn junior midfielder Katy Frierson (Homewood, Ala.; 3.91; political science) and Virginia Tech senior midfielder Jennifer Harvey (Roanoke, Va.; 3.96; chemistry).
Vendula Strnadova (Memphis)
The other seven Academic All-Americans from 2010 NCAA tournament teams include four second-teamers – Fresno State senior defender Katie Lee (Fresno, Calif.; 4.00; civil engineering), Maryland senior defender Caitlin McDowell (Plano, Texas; 3.93; marketing), Memphis senior midfielder Vendula Strnadova (Las Cruces, N.M.; 3.97; health & human performance; 3rd team in '09) and Morehead State senior forward Erin Adams (Beaver Dam, Ky.; 3.84; biology/pre-med) – along with three third-team honorees: Illinois senior defender Bethany Brown (Vernon Hills, Ill.; 4.00; criminal justice), Texas A&M senior midfielder Rachel Shipley (Plano, Texas; 3.68; finance) and North Dakota State senior Quin Ryan (Georgetown, Minn.; 3.93; economics).
Kristi Andreassen (Northern Arizona)
Northern Arizona senior defender Kristi Andreassen (Tempe, Ariz.; 4.00; exercise science) received the top honor, as Academic All-American of the Year (she was a second-team selection in '09). There are nine players among the 33 Academic All-Americans who carry 4.00 cumulative GPAs, led by six seniors: Andreassen, Hofstra's Bergstrom, Fresno State's Lee, Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Kaylin Lorbert (2nd team; Wildwood, Mo.; biological science); UTEP defender Melissa Desilets (2nd team; Edmonton, Alberta; chemistry), and Brown from Illinois. The others with 4.00 GPAs include Oklahoma State junior Lopez, Northern Colorado sophomore midfielder Danielle Birdsall (2nd team; Broomfield, Colo.; business administration) and Idaho sophomore forward Chelsea Small (2nd team; Solana Beach, Calif.; secondary education).
Lauren Fowlkes (Notre Dame)
The five players who repeated as CoSIDA Academic All-Americans include Portland's Tsao and Foxhoven, ND's Fowlkes, NAU's Andreasen and Strnadova of Memphis. Fowlkes now has the opportunity to earn the rare double-distinction of earning both CoSIDA Academic All-America and NSCAA All-America honors in consecutive seasons (she was an NSCAA third team All-American in '09).
All of the 11 first team Academic All-Americans for 2010 have been mentioned above, aside from Vanderbilt senior forward Molly Kinsella (Memphis, Tenn.; 3.89; molecular and cellular biology). The other two second-teamers (not mentioned previously) are Canisius junior midfielder Kelly Reinwald (Stafford, Va.; 3.90; finance) and Harvard junior forward Melanie Baskind (Framingham, Mass.; 3.80; neurobiology).
See below for listing of all 33 honorees, including five more third-teamers not mentioned previously – among them Nebraska's high-scoring sophomore forward Morgan Marlborough (Lee's Summit, Mo.; 3,50; elementary education), who has totaled 39 goals in her first two collegiate seasons.
Notre Dame (8 straight; 03'-10) and South Carolina (7; '04-'10) are the only Division I women's soccer teams to produce Academic All-Americans in each of the past seven seasons.
