UCLA JUNIOR 'KEEPER KATELYN ROWLAND CS360 PRIMETIME PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bruins veteran one of 11 week-8 players on the Primetime Performers Honor Roll for Oct. 7-13, which includes crosstown center back Mandy Freeman of USC (CS360 National Freshman of the Week).

Two members of Pac-12 crosstown rivals – UCLA junior goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland (Vacaville, Calif.) and USC freshman center back Mandy Freeman (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) – headline the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll  for week-8, as selected by CollegeSoccer360.com. Rowland is the CS360 National Primetime Player of the Week and Freeman the CS360 National Freshman of the Week, with nine others rounding out the Primetime Performers Honor Roll for Oct. 7-13.

ROWLAND's value often goes overlooked but her impact (as in the case with many 'keepers) goes beyond simple save totals. The veteran netminder allowed only one goal during a rare three-game week that spanned an extended 305 minutes of action: a 0-0 home result vs. a surging Washington team and then a pair of tight wins on UCLA's Bay-Area trip, 2-1 in two overtimes at Stanford (cs360 #5) and 1-0 at (14) California. In addition to her nine saves during the week, steady direction of the back line and ability to squelch many opposing chances before they developed, Rowland also provided a strong transition outlet throw that sprung Taylor Smith's long run/cross to Jenna Richmond for the goal that produced a 1-0 lead vs. Stanford (that game nearly ended 1-0, but the Cardinal executed a change-of-fields goal with a quality finish from Lo'eau LaBonta).

FREEMAN also shined during the same Bay-area swing, but in reverse order. The rookie center back performed with the savvy of a veteran, as USC played to 1-1 result at Cal and then won 1-0 at Stanford. She helped shut down several of the Pac-12's top offensive threats, as the Women of Troy returned home with a big bump to the team RPI while creeping closer to the .500 threshold needed for NCAA at-large qualification.

The 11 honorees include three forwards, two midfielders, four defenders and a pair of goalkeepers … five seniors, four juniors and two freshmen. Two of the Honor Roll members hail from Colorado and two more from California, plus one each from Australia, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin.

... Selection for the CS360 weekly awards is based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):

• Performed at a high level in a game that could be key to the team's postseason qualification, typically in a game involving a top-50 team from the CS360 Composite National Rankings (or in a game involving a conference favorite/leader from a league not represented in the CS360 top-50).
• In general, preference is given based on the quality of the opponent, contribution to team success and other situational factors involved in the player's accomplishments.
• Exhibited strong leadership and/or involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, late scores, momentum-shifting play, all-around performance/consistency, filling role/gameplan, team spirit, etc.
• Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).
• Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from team's home field and/or against a traditional rival.
• (Note that more players from conferences outside the CS360 top-50 will be honored later in the season, as league races heat up and individual results have greater bearing on postseason qualification).

Listing of the 11 honorees follows below – including short notes on each, with action photos at bottom of the page (more detailed player info. capsules being added) and headshots in right sidebar.
