Marquette win at Michigan 2015

> Marquette – looking to bounce back from an uncharacteristically disappointing/subpar 2014 season (plus an Opening Day loss vs. Utah) – earned a much-needed quality result with Sunday’s 2–0 win at Michigan (cs360 #31). Junior Molly Pfeiffer (pictured) assisted on Allison Jacobson’s tying goal in the 78th minute and then scored herself 34 seconds later, for the final margin (Michigan led for most of the game). – photo courtesy of Marquette

Nichelle Prince A300

___________

(8–23–15) – by Pete LaFleur (editor@collegesoccer360.com)

– Opening Week of the 2015 Division I college women’s soccer season is in the books, with the usual sprinkling of notable upsets but also plenty of blowout victories from some of the usual suspects.

For the eighth straight season, College Soccer 360 is compiling its unique Composite National Rankings (CNR; top–50), which form the basis of these daily scoreboard summaries (in addition to tracking other conference favorites, from conferences outside the top-50).

> Ohio State junior Nichelle Prince’s goal
five minutes into overtime delivered a huge
1–0 win over visiting Florida (cs360 #6).

The first weekend of the 2015 season (Aug. 21–23) saw higher-ranked teams within the CB360 Top–50 combine for an .825 winning pct. (63–11–6), a bit higher than the average that we've see across most weeks over the past few years, but due in part to numerous mismatches and the fact that only a handful of teams each day were facing fellow top-50 squads. We often see more Top–50 teams upset on Sunday (rather that Thursday/Friday), and that proved to be the case on Opening Weekend, as the higher-ranked teams had an .842 combined win pct. on Opening Day (33–5–3) but that pct. dipped to .808 on Sunday, Aug. 23 (30–6–3).

VT Gobbles Up Big Win

Murielle Tiernan A300

Junior Murielle Tiernan (pictured in 2014) scored early in the first half for a 1-0 lead, as [8] Virginia Tech went on to a 2-1 win over [9] West Virginia, in 2015 Opening Week’s only top-10 matchup within the CB360 Top-50.  Tiernan also scored both goals in VT’s opening 2-1 win over tournament host Indiana.

Here were the 11 losses suffered by CS360 Top–50 teams vs. lower-ranked/unranked teams (in the top–50), on Aug. 21–23:

• at Ohio State 1 … [6] Florida 0
• at
Long Beach State 1 … [7] UCLA 0
• [19]
USC 1 … [12] Texas Tech 0  (at New Mexico)
San Diego State 2 ... at [14] Kentucky 0  (SDSU is the Mt. West favorite)
• [20] BYU 2 ... [18] Cal 1  (at Hawaii)
William & Mary 3 … [27] Georgtown 0  (at James Madison)
Marquette 2 … at [31] Michigan 1
• at Nebraska 3 ... [37] Kansas 0
• at [39] Arizona 2 ... [36] Santa Clara 1
• at Wake Forest 4 ... [40] Georgia 0
• at Furman 2 ... [48] Oklahoma 1  (2 OT)

… and the six ties: Utah 0–0 at [20] DePaul ...at Colorado State 1–1 vs. [30] Colorado … SMU 1–1 at [34] Missouri …
at [38] Minnesota 0–0 vs. [37] Kansas … at High Point 0–0 vs. [43] Georgia ... Lipscomb 0–0 at [41] Tennessee.

In addition to four of the games referenced above (USC–TT, BYU–Cal, Arizona–SCU, Minn./KU), here’s how the other six head-to-head games within the CB360 Top–50 played out on Opening Week (each won by the higher-ranked team):
• [1] Florida State 1 ... [19] USC 0  (at New Mexico)
• [6] Florida 2 ... at [17] UCF 0
• [8] Virginia Tech 2 ... [9] West Virginia 1  (at Indiana)
• at [13] South Carolina 2 ... [48] Oklahoma 1  (2 OT)
• at [13] South Carolina 4 ... [50] Northeastern 1
• at [14] Kentucky 1 ... [23] Washington 0
note: [18] Clemson vs. [40] Texas was canc., due to extreme weather in Charleston, S.C., on Aug. 21

Cece Bilinger A300

> Arizona sophomore
Cece Bilinger (right)
drew a first-half penalty kick (converted by
Gabi Stoian to tie the game) then scored
midway through the second half, for a big
2–1 win over visiting Santa Clara (c
s360 #36).

The Virginia Tech-vs.-West Virginia game was the only top–10 showdown of Opening Week (based on the CNR), while there were five others between teams in the top–25 (Florida–UCF; FSU–USC; TT–USC; Cal–BYU and KY–WA). The two schools that like to be known as USC – Southern California and South Carolina – were the only CS360 Top–50 teams that played fellow top–50 squads in both of their games during Opening Week (USC beat TT and lost to FSU, both at UNM; S.C. had a pair of double-OT home wins, over Northeastern and Oklahoma).

Megan Trabert A290

> Utah senior center back Megan Trabert (left)
fronted a pair of Opening Week road shutouts
against notable opponents, as the Utes won
1–0 at Marquette before earning a 0–0
result at CS360 #22 DePaul.

Finally, here’s a bonus look at some noteworthy Opening Week results from other teams that are projected to be 2015 conference champions/NCAA Tournament participants:
• Boston U. (Patriot League) dropped a 1–2 game at crosstown rival [33] Boston College
• Dayton (Atlantic–10) lost both its games: 1–2 in OT at FIU, and 0–2 at Florida Gulf Coast (A–Sun fav.)

• Rice (C–USA) but a couple goals on the board but lost 2–4 to visiting [11] Texas A&M
• South Alabama (Sun Belt) won 1–0 at Mississippi State and 3–2 in OT at SoCon fav. Samford

• Stephen F. Austin (Southland) dropped a 1–4 game at  [42] Arkansas

a 1–2 deficit into a 3–2 road win, as the Jags (out of
the Sun Belt) topped the SoCon’s Samford in a
matchup of conference favorites. South Alabama
opened two days earlier with a 1–0 win
over SEC team Mississippi State.
