NCAA Title-Game Rematch History ...

When Stanford played at North Carolina a few days ago (Aug. 27), it marked the earliest rematch of the previous season's Division I women's soccer NCAA title game in the nearly three decades of D-I women's soccer play (since '82) ... Stanford gained some measure of redemption by playing UNC to a 2-2 tie, roughly nine months after dropping a hard-fought, 1-0 championship game vs. the Tar Heels to cap the 2009 season.

CollegeSoccer360 has crunched the historical numbers for such title-game rematch games, with notes following below (the bottom of this release includes a complete listing of the title games/rematches):

•  There had been 10 previous rematches of title games in the ensuing regular season – and Stanford did what only three of the previous 10 teams had managed to do (avenge the title-game loss in a regular-season win/tie) ... following Stanford's 2-2 game at UNC, the defending champion now is 7-2-2 in a title-game rematch during the following regular season ... George Mason beat North Carolina in the 1985 title game, but UNC then won the rematch vs. GMU early in the 1986 regular season (4-2, at GMU; 9/21/86) ... the defending champ then won the next four regular-season rematches, before Notre Dame played to a 2-2 game vs. visiting North Carolina on Sept. 19, 1997 (at ND ... UNC had beaten ND 1-0 in 2 OT, to win the '96 NCAA title) ... Portland beat its WCC rival Santa Clara in the 2002 NCAA title game, but SCU edged the Pilots the following November (2-1; 2 OT).

• The 11 title-game rematches that have been played in the ensuing regular season have included only one played in August (last week's UNC-Stanford tie), plus one played in the first week of September, four others played during the third week of Sept., another in the final week of Sept., three played in mid-October and one played the first week of November:

• There have been 17 seasons (out of 28) that featured a rematch of the previous season's Division I women's soccer title game ... in addition to the 11 regular-season rematches referenced above, there also have been two title-game rematches played the next season in conference tournaments (both won by the defending champ) and 11 more played in the next NCAA Tournament (defending champ has gone only 6-4-1 in those games) ... all told, the defending champions have compiled a .688 win pct. when facing the runner-up the next season (15-6-3):

Title-Game Rematches Played ...

... the next regular season: defending champion is 7-2-2

...the next season in conf. tournament: def. champ is 2-0-0

Stanford Posts Rare "Non-Loss" at UNC

note: all research below is courtesy of CollegeSoccer360.com  (please credit accordingly)

By Pete LaFleur  (CS360 founder/editor ... editor@collegesoccer360.com)

SEEEING RED – Over the past couple weeks, two teams – Texas A&M (3-0 loss; series now 1-13-0) and Stanford (2-2 tie; series now 0-8-3) – had the chance to improve on their modest all-time records vs. North Carolina, which has enjoyed sustained dominance over the past three decades (particularly at home):

• The Cardinal nearly became only the 20th different team ever to beat UNC, in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons ... it would have been only the 30th all-time loss for UNC in those 29 seasons (667-29-23/.944) ... Stanford is 0-2-2 vs. UNC in the eight-year tenure of head coach Paul Ratcliffe (0-1-2 over the past three seasons).

• Stanford already was one of only 13 teams ever to post two "non-losses" (wins/ties) vs. UNC and now is one of eight teams ever to register three or more wins/ties vs. UNC (0-8-3) ... others on that list: Notre Dame 4-12-2, Santa Clara 4-14-0, Florida State 2-22-2, Duke 2-41-1, George Mason 1-14-2, North Carolina State 1-40-2 and Central Florida 0-16-3.

• UNC still has lost only eight times at home (286-8-7/.962; in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons, since '82) ... Stanford's 2-2 game at UNC on Aug. 27, 2010, marked only the 15th time in those 29 seasons that UNC has suffered a loss/tie at home.

• Only three teams have posted multiple "non-losses" vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (from '82-'10) ... Notre Dame has beaten UNC three times at Fetzer, Duke has two wins and a tie vs. UNC at Fetzer, and Florida State has posted two ties vs. UNC at Fetzer,

• Santa Clara (2004, rd-of-16) and Notre Dame ('07, rd-of-16) are the only teams ever to beat UNC in the NCAAs, prior to the quarterfinals.

• UNC has lost only seven times in the NCAAs (106-7-1; .934)

• Only three teams have beaten UNC in the NCAAs on its home surface, Fetzer Field (75-3-1/.956 ... Notre Dame 1-0 in 1995 semifinals; Santa Clara 1-0/OT in 2004 rd-of-16; Florida State 1-1 in 2005 quarterfinals/FSU advanced on PKs; and ND 3-2 in 2007 rd-of-16)

TOUGH TO BEAT – UNC’s all-time record (667-29-23) in 29 NCAA seasons (1982-2010) includes only 12 opponents that have totaled at least two games vs. the Tar Heels that were not losses (wins or ties) ... Notre Dame is one of those teams with two “non-losses” vs. UNC and owns one of the best win percentages from that group (.294: 4-12-2), narrowly behind Miami's .286 (2-5-0) and ahead of Santa Clara’s .211 (4-15-0) ... all other teams (besides ND, Miami and SCU) are only 19-631-21 vs. UNC (.044), with ND and SCU accounting for roughly one-fourth of the all-time wins over UNC (8-of-29) ... later in the 2010 season, ACC foes Florida State, Duke and Miami will have the chance to join ND and SCU as teams that have beaten UNC three or more times ... here’s the list of teams with at least two wins/ties vs. UNC (series records include only NCAA-sanctioned varsity games), as of Aug. 28, 2010:

Pct. – Team (record vs. UNC)
.286 – Miami (2-5-0) ... all games coached by Tricia Taliaferro

.278 – Notre Dame (4-12-2) ... coach Chris Petrucelli 2-5-2; Randy Waldrum 2-7-0

.211 – Santa Clara (4-15-0) ... all games coached by Jerry Smith

.136 – Stanford (0-8-3) ... coach Berhane Andeberhan 0-1-1; Ian Sawyers 0-3-0;  Steve Swanson 0-1-0; Stephanie Erickson/Paul Sapsford 0-1-0; Paul Ratcliffe 0-2-2

.125 – Connecticut (2-14-0) ... all games coached by Len Tsantiris

.118 – George Mason (1-14-2)

.115 – Florida State (2-22-2)

.094 – Central Florida (0-13-3)

.071 – William & Mary (1-19-1)

.071 – Duke (2-32-1)

.048 – N.C. State (1-39-2)

.028 – Virginia (0-34-2)

10 other teams have one win vs. UNC: South Carolina (1-1-0), Cortland State (1-1-0), Missouri-St. Louis (1-2-0), Penn State (1-4-0), Virginia Tech (1-6-0), Florida (1-7-0), UMass (1-7-0), Texas A&M (1-13-0), Clemson (1-23-0) and Wake Forest (1-24-0)

Most wins plus ties (non-losses) vs. UNC
6 – Notre Dame  (4-12-2)
4 – Santa Clara  (4-14-0)
4 – Florida State  (2-22-2)
3 – Duke (2-41-1), George Mason (1-14-2), N.C. St. (1-40-2), Stanford (0-8-3), UCF (0-16-3)
2 – Miami (2-5-0), UConn (2-16-0), William & Mary (1-20-1) and Virginia (0-41-2)

Teams with multiple wins vs. UNC
4 – Notre Dame and Santa Clara
2 – Connecticut, Duke, Miami and Florida State

NCAA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS – Only five teams have knocked UNC out of the NCAAs prior to the title game ... of those teams, only one has gone on to win the NCAA title (ND, in 1995):

Team that have defeated/advanced past UNC in the NCAAs (prior to the final game)
1995 – Notre Dame (semifinals) ... beat Portland in final
2002 – Santa Clara (semifinals) ... lost to Portland in final
2004 – Santa Clara (round-of-16) ... lost to Notre Dame in semifinals
2005 – Florida State (quarterfinals/PKs) ... lost to UCLA in semifinals
2007 – Notre Dame (round-of-16) ... lost to Florida State in semifinals

Notes: UNC has advanced to the quarterfinals in 26 of its first 28 NCAA seasons (25 trips to the semifinals; 23 title-game appearances and 20 NCAA titles ... lost 1985 final vs. George Mason, 0-2 ... lost '98 final vs. Florida, 0-1 ... lost '01 final vs. Santa Clara, 0-1).

Senior Salute: First Look at Top Teams Over Past Four Seasons

Another exclusive feature from CollegeSoccer360.com has returned for the 2010 season: the Senior Salute listing of the Division I women's soccer programs with the most combined victories spanning the past four seasons.

North Carolina (69-8-4, from 2007-10) and Notre Dame (68-10-3) remain at the top of this list, followed by the Pac-10 duo of UCLA (64-6-5) and Stanford (63-6-7), along with fellow west-coast team Portland (61-8-0). As shown below, UCLA (the only team riding three straight 20-win seasons) actually has the top win pct. over the past four seasons (.887), followed by Portland (.884) and then UNC (.877).

3412952

Senior midfielder Kylie Wright (left) has appeared in 69 of 75 games (68 starts) during her UCLA career, helping the Bruins compile the nation's best win pct. (.887; 64-6-5) during that four-year span.

Dayton (46-1-1) – coming off a 16-1-6 season – is the most noteworthy program now on this four-year list that was not on the similar listing one year ago (included 30-35 teams, for the '06-'09 timeframe).

Look for regular updates from CS360 and some detailed analysis of these senior classes throughout the 2010 season.

Here's the complete updated list of the nation's winningest senior classes (note: when referencing this list, please credit CollegeSoccer360.com with the research and – if possible – provide a link to this blog post ... click on post headline above for the direct URL).

BC 'Keeper Mastroianni Headlines Primetime Performers

CLICK HERE (or access via AWARDS tab) for complete Primetime release, with photos and info. capsules on all 13 players.

Boston College junior goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni headlines the first group of Primetime Performers for the 2010 Division I women's soccer season, as presented by CollegeSoccer360.com. Mastroianni – whose 10 saves in the 1-1 tie vs. #2 Stanford included several game-changing plays – is joined by 12 other players from around the country, in comprising the first group of 2010 honorees for the CS360 Primetime Performers of the Week (full list below).

Selection is based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):

• Must have been playing in a game involving a top-50 team from the CS360 Composite National Rankings (or a preseason conference favorite), or performed at a high level in a game that is key to the team's postseason qualification.

• Involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, late scores, team leadership, etc.

• Overcame adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).

• Bonus consideration is given for key performances away from team's home field.

Here is link to the final Primetime release from the 2009 season (with links to earlier 2009 Ptimetime honorees):
