Handful of "big games" on relatively tame Friday (Oct. 1; w/ results)

Note: CollegeSoccer360 will be tracking Friday's action throughout the day, via this blog page, the adjacent sidebar scoreboard and via Twitter feed (cs360updates).

Compared to the past few Friday slates, the Division I games scheduled for Oct. 1 are relatively tame in terms of big games on a national scale. All told, there are 29 games on Friday's docket involving teams in the top-50 of the CS360 Composite National Rankings (33 teams in action; 17 idle), and the four head-to-head matchups between CS360 top-50 squads each feature at least one team ranked in the high-30s or 40s: #36 Milwaukee at #32 Texas (7 CT) ... #38 Colorado at #37 Texas Tech (6 CT) ... #19 Central Florida at #42 Memphis ... and #14 USC at #50 San Diego (a rare/odd regular-season rematch??; USD won at USC, 1-0, back on Aug. 20).

Two CS360 top-50 teams will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 2): #15 BYU (at Wyoming; 1 MT) and #20 California (at St. Mary's; 4 PT). Plenty of other CS360 top-50 teams that are idle on Friday will return to the pitch for Sunday games (Oct. 3), including three head-to-head battles: #1 Boston College at #9 Virginia (2 ET) ... #16 Santa Clara at #2 Stanford (1 PT) ... and #22 Duke at #10 Florida State (1 ET). There are six other Sunday games for top-50 squads that are idle on Friday: #11 Maryland at Virginia Tech (5 ET) ... Penn State at #23 Ohio State (3 ET) ... Delaware at  #24 Hofstra (1 ET) ... #41 Washington at #5 Portland ... Stony Brook at #43 Boston University (1 ET) ... and #49 Iowa at Wisconsin (1 CT). Three other CS360 top-50 squads – #13 Minnesota, #25 Wake Forest and #27 Arizona State – are idle all weekend.

CollegeSoccer360.com's exclusive tracking of the
winningest senior classes/4-year records in Division I women's soccer has been updated, through games played as of Sept. 26. The top-2 programs – North Carolina (76-9-5) and Notre Dame (75-11-3) – are separated by only one win, while Stanford (70-6-8) and UCLA (70-8-6) have edged ahead of fellow west-coast power Portland (69-9-0) in a tie for third place. The Portland seniors continue to own the top career winning pct. (.885). See bottom of this release for complete list of the 40 programs with the most victories over the past four seasons.

Three programs – BYU (61-15-5), Florida State (61-16-7) and Florida (60-16-7) – recently joined UNC, ND, Stanford, UCLA and Portland as teams that have totaled 60-plus victories over the past four seasons.

Boston College – riding a 28-4-3 record over the past two seasons – has been making moves up the 4-year record list (53-15-9), currently tied with Central Florida (53-17-9) for 13th on the list of winningest senior classes.

Double Rarity: BC's 3-2 win at UNC

note: all research below is courtesy of CollegeSoccer360.com  (please credit accordingly)

By Pete LaFleur  (CS360 founder/editor ... editor@collegesoccer360.com)

When Boston College won 3-2 last night at North Carolina (Sept. 24, 2010), history was made on several levels. Most notably, BC handed UNC only its ninth home loss ever at Fetzer Field while the Eagles became the 11th team ever to score three goals in a game against the Tar Heels (UNC never has allowed four goals).

5754767 Boston College junior Alaina Beyar pushed forward to score on a strong shot from the top of the box, forging a 2-2 game midway through the second half at North Carolina (BC went on to win, 3-2, handing the Tar Heels their ninth home loss over the past 29 seasons).

RARE WIN AT FETZER
 – Earlier in the 2010 season, two teams – Texas A&M (3-0 loss on Aug. 20; series now 1-13-0) and Stanford (2-2 tie on Aug. 27; series now 0-8-3) – had the chance to improve on their modest all-time records vs. North Carolina, which has enjoyed sustained dominance over the past three decades (particularly at home) ... last night (Sept. 24, 2010), Boston College did what A&M and Stanford were unable to do this season: beat UNC on its home turf, Fetzer Field ... consider the following:

• The Eagles became only the 20th different team ever to beat UNC (regardless of site), in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons ... it was only the 30th all-time loss for UNC in those 29 seasons (673-30-23/.943; as of 9/24/10).

• UNC now has lost only nine times at home (288-9-7/.959; in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons, since '82), as of 9/24/10 ... BC's 3-2 win at UNC marked only the 16th time in those 29 seasons (roughly once every two years) that UNC has suffered a loss/tie at home.

North Carolina All-Time Home Losses at Fetzer Field (9 times, since 1982)

10/19/94 ... 2-3 vs. Duke

12/1/95 ... 0-1 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA semifinals)

9/12/99 ... 2-3 vs. Penn State

11/20/04 ... 0-1 vs. Santa Clara  (NCAA Round-of-16)

10/9/05 ... 1-2 vs. Duke

9/1/07 ... 0-1 vs. South Carolina

11/24/07 ... 2-3 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA Round-of-16)

9/4/08 ... 0-1 vs. Notre Dame

9/24/10 ... 2-3 vs. Boston College

North Carolina All-Time Home Ties at Fetzer Field (7 times, since 1982)

9/1/85 ... 3-3 vs. George Mason

8/31/86 ... 1-1 vs. Central Florida

10/27/02 ... 0-0 vs. Duke

11/1/02 ... 1-1 vs. Maryland

11/25/05 ... 1-1 vs. Florida State  (NCAA quarterfinals; FSU advanced 5-4 on PKs)

10/3/08 ... 1-1 vs. Florida State

8/27/10 ... 2-2 vs. Stanford

• As shown in the above list, four of the nine teams that have beaten UNC at Fetzer Field (and one that claimed a tie) have needed three goals to do so, and all nine Tar Heels' home losses have been by a 1-goal margin ... BC joins George Mason ('85), Duke ('94), Penn State ('99) and Notre Dame ('07) as the only teams to score three goals vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (ND had been the only one to do so since 1999).

• The 2010 season is only the fifth time that UNC has suffered two home losses/ties in the same season (never more than two in same year), also: 7-0-2 in 2002, 8-1-1 in 2005, 9-20 in 2008 and 10-1-1 in 2010 ... the Tar Heels have gone perfect at home twice over the past six seasons (11-0-0 in 2006, 13-0-0 in '09), with a combined home record of "only" 53-5-3 (.893) during that six-year span (2005-10) ... in the previous 23 seasons (1982-2004), UNC never suffered multiple home losses/ties in a season (235-4-3; .977).

THREE-GOAL ATTACK – North Carolina never has allowed more than three goals in a game (spanning its 29 NCAA seasons; '82-'10) and now has yielded three goals only 11 times ... Boston College is the eighth different program ever to put three goals on the board vs. UNC (UConn, N.C. St. and Florida St. each have done so twice) ... spanning he past three decades, when the Tar Heels have scored at least two goals, they have compiled a win pct. over 95% from 1982-2010 (671-22-22; .954), but UNC is only 2-8-1 all-time (.227) when allowing three goals and has lost its past six games when the opponent has scored three times (0-6-0, since 1990) ... despite owning a dismal 1-39-2 all-time record vs. UNC (.048), North Carolina State is one of the three teams ever to post multiple 3-goal games vs. the Tar Heels (wild postseason games in 1987 and '90, won by UNC 5-3 and 4-3 respectively) ... 1990 is the only time that UNC has allowed three goals in a game more than once in a season.

Team that have scored three goals vs. North Carolina (1982-2010)

9/3/83 ... 1-3 at Connecticut

9/1/85 ... 3-3 vs. George Mason

10/29/87 ... 5-3 vs. North Carolina State  (ACC Final; at Duke)

9/22/90 ... 2-3 at Connecticut

11/1/90 ... 4-3 vs. North Carolina State  (NCAA Quarterfinal)

10/19/94 ... 2-3 vs. Duke

9/12/99 ... 2-3 vs. Penn State

10/17/00 ... 2-3 at Florida State  (2 OT)

11/24/07 ... 2-3 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA Round-of-16)

10/22/09 ... 2-3 at Florida State

9/24/10 ... 2-3 vs. Boston College

(UConn, N.C. St. and Florida St. each have two 3-goal games vs. UNC)

MORE RARITIES – Earlier in the 2010 season, Stanford – which already was one of only 13 teams ever to post two "non-losses" (wins/ties) vs. UNC – became one of eight teams ever to register three or more wins/ties vs. UNC (0-8-3) ... others on that list: Notre Dame 4-12-2, Santa Clara 4-14-0, Florida State 2-22-2, Duke 2-41-1, George Mason 1-14-2, North Carolina State 1-40-2 and Central Florida 0-16-3 ... Stanford is 0-2-2 vs. UNC in the eight-year tenure of head coach Paul Ratcliffe (0-1-2 over the past three seasons).

• Only three teams have posted multiple "non-losses" vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (from '82-'10) ... Notre Dame has beaten UNC three times at Fetzer, Duke has two wins and a tie vs. UNC at Fetzer, and Florida State has posted two ties vs. UNC at Fetzer.

• Santa Clara (2004, round-of-16) and Notre Dame ('07, rd-of-16) are the only teams ever to beat UNC in the NCAAs, prior to the quarterfinals.

• UNC has lost only seven times in the NCAAs (106-7-1; .934).

• Only three teams (four times total; ND twice) have beaten UNC in the NCAAs on its home surface, Fetzer Field (75-3-1/.956 ... Notre Dame 1-0 in the 1995 semifinals; Santa Clara 1-0/OT in 2004 rd-of-16; Florida State 1-1 in 2005 quarterfinals/FSU advanced on PKs; and ND 3-2 in 2007 rd-of-16).

TOUGH TO BEAT
 – UNC’s all-time record (673-30-23/.943; as of 9/25/10) in 29 NCAA seasons (1982-2010) includes only 12 opponents that have totaled at least two games vs. the Tar Heels that were not losses (wins or ties) ... Notre Dame is one of those teams with two “non-losses” vs. UNC and owns one of the best win percentages from that group (.294: 4-12-2), narrowly behind Miami's .286 (2-5-0) and ahead of Santa Clara’s .211 (4-15-0) ... all other teams (besides ND, Miami and SCU) are only 20-637-21 vs. UNC (.045; as of 9/25/10), with ND and SCU accounting for roughly one-fourth of the all-time wins over UNC (8-of-29) ... later in the 2010 season, ACC foes Florida State, Duke and Miami will have the chance to join ND and SCU as teams that have beaten UNC three or more times ... here’s the list of teams with at least two wins/ties vs. UNC (series records include only NCAA-sanctioned varsity games), as of Sept. 25, 2010:

(As shown above, SCU's Smith has coached four wins vs. UNC while four others have led their teams to a pair of wins vs. UNC: ND's Petrucelli (also two ties) and Waldrum, UConn's Tsantiris, and Miami's Taliaferro ... GMU's Leung and FSU's Krikorian aborh have a win and two ties in their coaching careers vs. UNC ... W&M's Daly and Duke's Church each have a win and tie vs. UNC ... Stanford's Ratcliffe, UCF's Barker, NC State's Gross and UVa's Swanson all have coached their teams to a pair of ties vs. the Tar Heels.

11 other teams have one varsity win vs. UNC (since '82): South Carolina (1-1-0), Cortland State (1-1-0), Missouri-St. Louis (1-2-0), Penn State (1-4-0), Virginia Tech (1-6-0), Florida (1-8-0), UMass (1-6-0), Boston College (1-10-0), Texas A&M (1-13-0), Clemson (1-23-0) and Wake Forest (1-24-0)

2005 – Florida State (quarterfinals/PKs) ... lost to UCLA in semifinals
2007 – Notre Dame (round-of-16) ... lost to Florida State in semifinals

Notes: UNC has advanced to the quarterfinals in 26 of its first 28 NCAA seasons (25 trips to the semifinals; 23 title-game appearances and 20 NCAA titles ... lost 1985 final vs. George Mason, 0-2 ... lost '98 final vs. Florida, 0-1 ... lost '01 final vs. Santa Clara, 0-1).

Previous CS360 Senior Salutes (2010)
Aug. 26
• Sept. 2  (featured team: BYU)

CollegeSoccer360.com's exclusive tracking of the winningest senior classes/4-year records in Division I women's soccer has been updated, through games played as of Sept. 7. The top-3 programs – North Carolina (71-8-5), Notre Dame (70-10-3), UCLA (66-7-5) – remain the same, while Portland (65-8-0) has edged ahead of its west-coast rival Stanford (64-6-8), which was idle during the past week. The Portland seniors also continue to own the top career winning pct. (.890, despite being 4th in total wins from '07-'10). See bottom of this release for complete list of the 40-plus programs with the most victories over the past four seasons.

3764313Versatile veteran Lauren Fowlkes (left) – who earned the rare double-honor as an All-American and Academic All-American in 2009 – is part of a Notre Dame senior class that has compiled a 70-10-3 record over the past four seasons

The Notre Dame seniors picked up their 70th career win on Sunday, Sept. 5 (2-0 vs. Texas Tech), one week after the UNC seniors had reached the 70-win mark. The Irish advanced to the NCAA College Cup semifinals (or title game) in each of the past three seasons, while going 19-5-2 in 2007, 26-1-0 in '08 (NCAA runner-up) and 21-4-1 in '09. With a strong regular season and deep postseason run, the current ND seniors could reach 90 career wins, something accomplished by only 20 seniors classes in the previous 28 season of D-I women's soccer.

Six players have been members of the Notre Dame program in each of the past four seasons, led by the versatile talent Lauren Fowlkes (Lee's Summit, Ohio), current team scoring leader Rose Augustin (Silver Lake, Ohio) and four-year starting outside back Julie Scheidler (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Fowlkes – who earned the rare double-honor of being an All-American and Academic All-American, in 2009 – has split time during her Irish career at center back and forward, in addition to making some starts in the midfield. She missed severa games during ND's 2009 season (due to the Under-20 World Championships), but has logged 74 career games with 61 starts (13 goals, 5 assists).

5619925Rose Augustin (left)

Augustin earned second team all-BIG EAST honors in 2009, when she played primarily as an attacking midfielder, and has served mostly as a forward this season while scoring four of the team's seven goals. The set-play specialist has missed only one game over the past four seasons (82 GP), with 53 career starts and 57 points (22G-13A).

5620185Julie Scheidler (left)

Scheidler has played in all 83 of Notre Dame's games during the 2007-10 seasons (73 starts; 1G-10A) and could become the 34th player in the 29-year history of Division I women's soccer to play 100-plus games in her career (three UNC players – Kristi Eveland, Whitney Engen and Casey Nogueira – reached that century mark during the 2009 season).

5620082Taylor Knaack (left)

All six of the Notre Dame seniors – including forward Taylor Knaack (Arlington, Texas), goalkeeper Nikki Weiss (Redding, Conn.) and midfielder Erica Iantorno (Hinsdale, Ill.) – started in the 70th win for their class, vs. Texas Tech. Knaack saw her freshman season wiped out due to an ACL knee injury, but she has come back to play in 57 games over the past three seasons (30 GS; 11G-7A).

5620040Erica Iantorno (left)

Iantorno has provided a spark off the bench throughout her career, as both a forward and midfielder (76 GP/3 GS; 8G-13A), while Weiss – a member of CS360's most recent Primetime Performers of the Week – owns a 0.58 career goals-against average, spanning 39 appearances (24 starts; 19-4-2 record).
