Another Super Sunday Slated for Nov. 1

(reminder: check the CS360 Twitter feed – located on the top-left corner of the CS360 main page and blog page – for in-game updates and other news throughout the day on Sunday; the feed includes the 30 most-recent "tweats" ... CS360 also will post a wrapup of the entire day on Sunday night)

Sunday's Division I women's soccer schedule will feature 32 teams in action from CS360's top-50 of the Composite National Rankings (CNR) – but there will be only 19 games involving those teams, because there are 13 "big games" on tap that will feature matchups between CS360 top-50 teams.

Four of the top games will see two CNR top-20 teams face off: #9 Wake Forest at #6 Boston College ... #5 North Carolina at #10 Maryland .. #4 Florida State at #17 Virginia Tech ... and #2 Portland at #20 Santa Clara. Here's a look at the 13 noteworthy showdowns on Nov. 1, with many of these games potentially having big ramifications on NCAA Tournament qualification (rank refers to the CNR):

Senior Salute (Stanford seniors post 70th career win; updated thru 10/30 games)

This update includes Thursday and Friday's games (Oct. 29-30), involving most of the teams on the below list. Stanford – which has won all 18 of its games this season – beat Arizona State on Friday (3-1), joining North Carolina, Notre Dame, UCLA and Portland as teams that have compiled 70-plus wins over the past four seasons (70-11-8; .832). The USC senior class remains one shy of 60 career victories for its seniors class (there are 14 current senior classes with 60-plus career wins).

(Note that a CS360 tribute to the UNC seniors – including video interview clips – is in the works and will be posted on the site soon.)

Five of the teams on this list will be in action on Haloween day: William & Mary at Old Dominion (1 ET), Navy at American (1 ET), Wyoming at BYU (1 MT), and North Texas at Denver (12 MT).

Stanford entered the season seventh on the below list with 52 wins from 2006-08 (one win behind Florida State and Texas A&M) – but the Cardinal has gained separation from both those teams, as FSU now has 66 wins from '06-'09 while A&M has 65. It's possible that Stanford could finish the season fourth on this list, a spot currently occupied by Portland's seniors (who are 71-11-3 in their career and entered the season with three more career wins than Stanford's seniors).

The Cardinal also own an impressive record of 40-2-1 (.942) spanning the past two seasons, tops in the nation for that two-year period (Stanford reached the NCAA semifinals in 2008). Other curent two-year records of note (2008-09) include: Notre Dame (40-4-1), North Carolina (38-4-3), UCLA (37-3-3) and Portland (36-3-0).

Stanford's senior class includes six players, led by three starters – forward Kelley O'Hara (Fayetteville, Ga.), outside back Ali Riley (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) and central defender Alicia Jenkins (Diamond Springs, Calif.) – along with midfielder Kristin Stannard (Midlothian, Va.), fifth-year senior M/F Hillary Heath (Seattle, Wash.) and defender Katie Riley (Manteca, Calif.), who has two years of eligibility remaining after the '09 season.

Kelley O'Hara

O'Hara is a leading candidate for 2009 national player-of-the-year honors, after racking up 19 goals and 8 assists (46 points) this season. Much of O'Hara's offensive production has come in clutch situations – as she is a five-time selection to CS360's Primetime Performers of the Week (including each of the past four weeks). O'Hara has either scored (7) or assisted (3) on 10 of Stanford's 18 gamewinning goals this season, with her career stats including 50 goals, 27 assists (127 pts) and 19 GWGs in 79 games played (73 starts).

Ali Riley

Ali Riley – a member of the New Zealand National Team and an all-Pac-10 selection in 2007 – is considered one of the nation's elite outside backs. She has started all 18 games this season (1G-1A), with her career stats now including 7G-10A in 59 games played (56 GS).

Alicia Jenkins

Riley and Jenkins (18 GS; career: 1G-1A, 87 GP/74 GS) have combined to anchor Stanford's 2009 back line that has limited its opponents to 11 goals this season (0.61 GAA). The tough Cardinal defense also has allowed only 124 shots (6.9 per game), 42 shots on goal (2.3/gm) and 29 corner kicks (1.6) all season.

Kristin Stannard

Stannard – a part-time starter in each of the past three seasons – has been one of the Cardinal's top reserve midfielders this season (14 GP) and registered a hat trick in the early-season win over Virginia Tech (which has emerged as one of the top teams in the ACC). She has totaled 38 career points in her Stanford career (16G-6A) while appearing in 81 games (35 starts).

Hillary Heath

The fifth-year player Heath also has been a valuable reserve offensive player this season, appearing in all 18 games with a pair of starts (1A). Heath missed the 2007 season due to injury but has appeared in 75 games during her four healthy seasons (5G-11A; 28 GS).

Katie Riley

Katie Riley – who also missed the '07 season due to injury – has played in eight games this season and 28 in her career, including 12 starts as a freshman in 2006.

This update includes three midweek wins for teams on this list (Milwaukee, Purdue and BYU) and is current through games on Oct. 28. Stanford – which has won all 17 of its games this season – is rapidly approaching the 70-win milestone for its senior class (69-11-8), while the USC senior class is one win shy of 60 spanning the past four seasons (there are 13 current senior classes with 60-plus career wins).

With its next win, Stanford's seniors will become the fifth current class in Division I women's soccer with 70 or more career wins. Senior Salute (ND seniors now own nation's-best 84 career wins; thru 10/25 games)

This update includes Saturday's and Sunday's games (Oct. 24-25), involving nearly all teams listed below. Following North Carolina's loss at Miami (1-0) and Notre Dame's 2-0 win over Georgetown, the Irish seniors now own the most career wins in the nation (84-10-4, one ahead of UNC's 83-9-4). During the month of October, Notre Dame has gone 7-0-1 while the Tar Heels have slipped back with a 3-3-0 mark this month. The UNC seniors still maintain a higher career win pct. (.885, to ND's .878), as the Tar Heels have one more win, one more loss and the same number of ties as the Irish over the past four seasons ('06-'09).

Stanford – which has won all 17 of its games this season – is rapidly approaching the 70-win milestone for its senior class (69-11-8), while the Oklahoma State senior class picked up its 60th career victory on Sunday (1-0 vs. Baylor). USC now sits one shy of its 60th win spanning the past four seasons.

Notre Dame's seven seniors – several of whom have battled through various injuries in their careers – include five who have been regular members of the starting lineup over the past few years: forward Michele Weissenhofer, midfielder Courtney Rosen, M/D Amanda Clark, defender Haley Ford and goalkeeper Kelsey Lysander.

The Notre Dame and UNC seniors both have the chance to eclipse 90 career wins, a feat achieved only 18 times previously in the history of Division I women's soccer. During the current decade, there have been nine seniors classes that compiled more than 90 career wins: the UNC seniors in 2006 (97-7-3), 2000 (97-6-1), 2001 (94-7-0), 2008 (94-7-4), 2003 (93-6-4), 2004 (92-4-6) and 2005 (91-4-7) – all but '02 and '07 – plus ND's senior classes in 2006 (92-8-3) and '08 (92-10-3).

The 18 all-time senior classes with more than 90 career wins include 15 from UNC (1992-2001, '03-'06, '08) and three from Notre Dame ('97, '06, '08). The winningest senior class in D-I women's soccer history (.967/102-3-1) played for UNC from 1995-98.

Dozen More Top-50 Upsets On Sunday

There were 36 games on Sunday involving teams in the top-50 of the CollegeSoccer360.com Composite National Rankings, and one-third of those games saw the unranked/lower-ranked team register the upset win/tie. Those 12 games included three top-10 teams (UNC, Wake Forest and South Carolina) that were upset/tied, along with four other teams ranked in the CNR top-25 (Va-Tech, Rutgers, Georgia and TX A&M) that failed to win as the higher-ranked team.

Miami senior midfielder Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif.) scored the 81st-minute goal that beat #2 UNC (1-0).

Kudos go out to Miami, Virginia, LSU, Duke, Louisville, Auburn, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Texas and Michigan for their upset wins/ties, with several of those teams needing a positive result today to help their postseason causes. Sunday's big day of soccer – which for many teams will be the final day of the regular season – features virtually all of the nation's top teams in action. Senior Salute (Portland seniors post 70th career win; thru 10/23 games)

This update includes Thursday's and Friday's games (Oct. 22-23), involving most of the teams listed below. Following North Carolina's loss at Florida State (2-3/OT) and Notre Dame's 2-0 win over Villanova, those teams now are tied for having the most wins over the past four seasons (both teams have 83 wins and four ties from 2006-09, with ND having two more losses, 10 to 8).

Portland's seniors picked up the 70th win of their career (70-11-3), doing so in impressive fashion with a 5-1 victory over potential WCC upstart St. Mary's. UNC, ND and UCLA (76-9-5) are the only other current senior classes with 70-plus career wins. Stanford – which has won all 16 of its games this season – is rapidly approaching the 70-win milestone for its senior class (68-11-8), while the USC and Oklahoma State senior classes now are one win shy of their 60th career victory.

Portland senior Michelle Enyeart (above) has played in most of Portland's 70 wins spanning the past four seasons (2006-09), while totaling 40 career goals, 30 assists and 17 gamewinning goals in 73 career games played with the Pilots (56 starts).

Senior Salute (Charlotte joins 60-win group; thru 10/18 games)

Charlotte's seniors (from left) – forward Leah Zappone (#17), goalkeeper Nicole Mercer, midfielder Hailey Beam (#13) and 'keeper Lauren Brown (#1) – helped make their 60th career win a memorable one on Sunday, as the 49ers overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat George Washington (3-2).

This update includes Sunday's games (Oct. 18), involving roughly half of the teams listed below. North Carolina (83) and Notre Dame (82) remain 1-2 in total wins over the past four seasons, with the Irish seniors also now nudging back in front of UCLA (.875 to .871) with the second-best career win pct. on this list (ND beat Providence and UCLA lost at Stanford, both 2-0, on Sunday).

Charlotte's veteran leaders became the 12th current senior class to reach 60 career wins, after rallying on Sunday to beat George Washington (3-2). Portland's 4-0 win at Loyola Marymount leaves the Pilot seniors one shy of 70 career wins, while USC and Oklahoma State both sit two wins away from the 60 plateau.

CS360 On Site at Wake Forest ...

College Soccer 360 is on hand for today's game between Miami at Wake Forest, with the Demon Deacons just taking a quick 2-0 lead early in the second half on goals by Bess Harrington and Jackie Logue. WFU nearly jumped ahead 3-0, but Vikki Alonso dove to her right and saved Bianca D'Agostino's low penalty-kick shot. Score remains 2-0, with 29 minutes left to play.

Miami's Jordan Roseboro just had a strong scoring chance as she broke into the top of the box. Amanda Barasha charged off her line and Roseboro switched the ball to her left foot, but her low shot from 16 yards out skipped wide of the left post. ... It easily could be 6-0 right now, as Wake has missed three tap-in chances over the past few minutes (plus the PK).

... And Alonso just came up with a PK save of her own, diving right to stop a rising shot from Roseboro (21 min. left).

This update includes games from earlier this week (Oct. 15-17), involving nearly every team listed below. North Carolina and Notre Dame remain 1-2 in total wins over the past four season, but UCLA still has a better win pct. than ND during that span. BYU's seniors picked up a pair of wins this week, giving them 61 carer wins and joining 10 other current senior classes with 60-plus wins over the past four seasons (see list below).

Unlucky 13 – plenty of Sunday upsets ...

There were 35 games on Sunday involving teams in the top-50 of the CS360 Composite National Rankings (CNR) – and nearly 40% of those games saw the higher-ranked team suffer a loss or tie. Most notably, Virginia Tech (#9 in the CNR) dropped a 3-1 game at #19 Maryland while four other CNR top-25 teams lost or tied to unranked/lower-ranked teams on Sunday: #15 Connecticut (2-1 loss at South Florida), #17 Santa Clara (1-0 loss at #47 San Diego), #20 Michigan State (0-0 vs. Michigan) and #21 Purdue (1-0 loss vs. #37 Minnesota).

Throughout the past week, there were 63 total games involving CNR top-50 teams and nearly 70% of time (43) the higher-ranked teams were victorious in those games. Of the seven upset losses/ties on Wed.-Fri., five of them saw top-20 teams be prevented from wins – as San Diego State tied #12 BYU (2-2), #11 Wake Forest shut out #4 Florida State (3-0), #43 Marquette nipped #15 UConn in double-OT (3-2), #32 Mississippi won at #12 Georgia (1-0), and Kentucky knocked off #10 LSU (1-0).

The 2009 season has been a rollercoaster one for many top teams and several leagues. In a three-day span this past week, San Diego provided a perfect example of that back-and-forth trend – as the #47 Toreros had a subpar result on Friday at Long Beach State (0-0) before posting their 1-0 win over #17 Santa Clara two days later (USD thus is on the below list twice, once for a negative result and once for a positive).

Navy's win over rival Army – in front of a school-record 2,627 fans at Navy's newly remodeled soccer facility – gave the Middies their 60th win over the past four seasons, a mark reached by only six other current senior classes (see list below).

BYU won 1-0 at UNLV on Saturday (leaving the Cougars seniors one win shy of 60 for their career, along with Florida and Denver). Furman and James Madison similarly are one win shy of the 50-win plateau for the past four seasons.

Sunday's Big Games

Nearly all of the teams (44) in the CS360 top-50 Composite National Rankings (CNR; see blog post below) will be in action on Sunday, Oct. 11 (the six idle teams include North Carolina, Portland, Wake Forest, BYU, Washington and Indiana). Nine of Sunday's games will feature matchups between top-50 CNR teams, most notably: #9 Virginia Tech at #19 Maryland and #25 Arizona State at #5 UCLA. Several teams listed in the above 14 games are desperate for a big win – with those teams including the likes of Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado, San Diego and Auburn. Virginia (now 6-3-3) was a CNR top-10 team a couple weeks ago, before going 1-2-1 in its past four games (2-1 losses to N.C. State and Virginia Tech; 2-2 tie with Maryland) ... West Virginia (now 6-4-4) similarly was in the CNR top-15 but is 4-3-1 since winning at UVa in mid-Sept. During the past month, the Mountaineers (favored to win their BIG EAST division) have lost to Dartmouth (1-0), tied Pittsburgh (1-1), lost 2-1 vs. South Florida and come close to upsetting Notre Dame (led 2-1, but lost 3-2 in OT).

Colorado (7-7-0) also was a CNR top-20 squad early in the season, but the Buffs have managed only a 4-6-0 record in their past 10 games (including a 2-1 loss to then-unranked Oregon, a 2-1 defeat at Baylor, and Friday's 1-0 OT loss at Big 12 co-favorite Missouri). San Diego (6-4-2) tied UCLA early in the season but now finds itself on the verge of falling out of the CNR top-50. The Toreros could use an upset win over Santa Clara to help upset a 2-1 loss to Cal State Bakersfield and a scoreless tie at Long Beach State (USD had the chance to post big wins several times in recent weeks but ended up losing to the likes of Ohio State, Kansas and USC).

Finally, Auburn (5-5-3) survived a UNC onslaught for a scoreless tie on Sept. 20, but the Tigers are only 2-3-0 in their past five games (after being a CNR top-25 team earlier in the season) – including SEC losses to current top-tier teams Mississippi (3-2/2 OT), LSU (2-0) and South Carolina (1-0/OT).

This update includes Wednesday's and Thursday's games (Oct. 7-8) involving a handful of the team's listed below. Florida State lost at Wake Forest (3-0), leaving the Seminoles tied with Stanford for fifth on this list with 63 win over the past two seasons. BYU played to a scoreless tie at San Diego State (leaving the Cougars seniors two wins shy of 60 for their career) while Furman lost in double-OT vs. Samford. With that loss, the Paladins still are two away from the 50-win plateau for the 2006-09 span (as is James Madison), while the Navy seniors will reach 60 carer wins with their next victory.

This update includes Saturday's and Sunday's games (Oct. 3-4) involving most of the team's listed below. With UNC's loss at Virginia Tech, Notre Dame's senior class had a chance to move one win closer to the Tar Heels – but the Irish played to a scoreless tie on the road vs. Pittsburgh (ND also remains two wins shy of reaching the 80-win plateau spanning the past four seasons). Florida State's 4-0 win over Miami on Sunday re-forges a tie for fifth place on this list with Stanford (both programs have 66 wins from '06-'09). Florida's loss on Sunday at Mississippi (3-2) leaves the Gator seniors two wins shy of 60 for their career. The senior classes from Furman and James Madison both have 49 career wins, leaving them on the verge of the 50-win club (which currently includes 24 teams, all listed below).
