Partial Update of CS360 Composite National Rankings

CS360 is close to releasing updated Composite National Rankings (waiting on Albyn Jones new ratings). The CNR now will include six different "ingredients" (each factoring eually): the NSCAA and Soccer Times coaches polls, the Soccer America rankings, the Top Drawer Soccer projected NCAA Tournament field, and the statistical ratings by Albyn Jones and Massey. The CNR order listed below takes into account last week's Albyn Jones numbers, but its likely to be fairly accurate even when the new AJ ratings are factored into the CNR.

Based on these current rankings, three teams (LSU, Minnesota and Missouri) look to be returning to the CNR while Virginia Tech may be a newcomer to the Composite National Rankings (again, updated CNR won't be official until the new AJ ratings are factored into the formula). The four teams that may be dropping out of the CNR top-50 include: Penn State, Auburn, Nebraska and Long Beach State.

Here's the current CNR top-50, pending the addition of the updated Albyn Jones ratings (final update will be posted as soon as possible):

CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week #5 (Sept. 21-27)

The final full week of September once again provided many clutch performances  throughout the nation, with 18 players honored by CollegeSoccer360.com as this season's fifth group of Primetime Performers of the Week.

Each week for the rest of the season, CS360 will honor players based on any/all of the following "primetime" criteria (i.e. not solely based on raw stats):

• Must have been playing for a top-25 team or against such a top-level opponent (this requirement may be expanded late in the regular season, based on the importance of non-top-25 games in terms of conference tournament and/or NCAA qualification).

• Involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, late scores, team leadership, etc.

• Performing at a top level against a team rated highly nationally (or within its own conference)., with bonus consideration for key performances away from home field.

• Overcoming adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).

For this fifth week of Primetime Performer honorees, CS360 again has selected 18 players (listed at the top of this release), to represent the number on a typical "travel" top-18 squad (the usual number of honorees will be 18). This honoree group includes 11 forwards, three midfielders, two defenders and two goalkeepers. They come from 17 different teams (two from UNC) and four of them are California natives, plus two each from the home states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington, along with one each from Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. The 18 include seven seniors, four juniors, six sophomores and one freshman.

North Carolina players have combined for has six Primetime Performer honors spanning the past five weeks, followed by five each from Santa Clara and Stanford, four from Florida State, and three each from BYU and UCF. Five players now have repeated Primetime Performer honors this season: Santa Clara sixth-year defender Jordan Angeli, BYU freshman forward Carlee Payne, Rutgers junior forward Ashley Jones, UNC senior defender Whitney Engen and Pittsburgh junior goalkeeper Morie Kephart,

Headshots for each of the 18 players (as available) are included in the righthand sidebar and capsule tributes (with action photos) will follow below.

Note: player tribute capsules (with action photos) will be added to this release, on a continuing basis (similar to the past four weeks) ... all photos are courtesy of the various schools and their photographic staffs.

Sunday's Upsets ...

Sunday's action around the nation included 36 games involving teams ranked in the CS360 top-50 Composite National Rankings (CNR), with 15 of those games seeing the lower-ranked/unranked team posting the upset win (8) or tie (7). Most notably, four teams posted victories over CNR top-20 teams – as Oklahoma beat #12 Texas A&M (3-2), #33 USC won at #14 Santa Clara (2-0), Miami beat #18 Maryland (2-0) and Missouri upset #19 Oklahoma State (3-2). Here's a complete list of Sunday's upset wins/ties (again, based on the Composite National Rankings top-50):

• at Oklahoma 3, #12 Texas A&M 2
• #33 USC 2, at #14 Santa Clara 0
• #47 Villanova 1 at #17 Rutgers 1
• at Miami 2, #18 Maryland 0
• at Missouri 3, #19 Oklahoma State 2
• Memphis 1, at #21 Central Florida 0
• at Wisconsin 3, #23 Indiana 2

• at Texas Tech 3, #44 Nebraska 3

Three Teams Have Allowed Two Goals or Fewer

Samford allowed a goal for the first time this season on Sunday, Sept. 27 (1-0 loss at College of Charleston) but the Bulldogs now are the only team in the nation that has allowed only one goal in the 2009 season. It also appears that South Carolina and Daytom are the only teams that have allowed only two goals this season:

Teams that have allowed 1-2 goals in 2009 (as of Sept. 27 games)

• Samford  (10-1 scoring ... 6-1-1 record)
• South Carolina  (28-2 scoring ... 10-0-0 record)
• Dayton  (20-2 scoring ... 6-0-4 record)

note: research courtesy of CollegeSoccer360.com and pending confirmation from upcoming NCAA statistics update.

Stanford and South Carolina Only Unbeaten/Untied Teams Left (also four unbeaten with ties)

Following the past Sunday's action, there now are only two unbeaten/untied teams –  Stanford and South Carolina (both 10-0-0) – remaining from more than 300 in all of D-I women's soccer. Boston College suffered its first loss of the season vs. Florida State on Sunday (2-3). Here's the teams that have yet to lose or tie (all research courtesy of CS360):

10-0-0 ... Stanford  (34-6 scoring ... 10/1 – at Santa Clara)
10-0-0 ... South Carolina  (28-2 scoring ... 10/2 – at Mississippi)

There also are four other teams that remain unbeaten but have one or more ties (now six total teams are unbeaten, two of them with no ties), with two of these teams owning multiple ties:

11-0-1 ... Louisiana Tech  (49-6 scoring ... 10/2 – vs. Idaho)
9-0-1 ... North Carolina  (28-3 scoring ... 10/1 – at Boston College)

7-0-2 ... Michigan State  (23-5 scoring ... Oct. 2 – at Indiana)
5-0-4 ... Dayton  (16-2 scoring ... Oct. 2 – at Fordham)

Note – two teams dropped off the no-losses with ties list on Sunday: Canisius (1-2 vs. Loyola-Md.) and Samford (0-1 at College of Charleston).

Senior-Class Salute – UCLA veterans notch 70th career win (now updated thru 9/26 games)

contact: Pete LaFleur, editor@collegesoccer360.com

This update includes Friday and Saturday's games involving 14 of the team's listed below. Two senior classes – Milwaukee (5-1 vs. Loyola Chicago) and North Texas (2-0 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette) – posted their  50th career win on Friday, becoming two of the 22 current senior classes with 50-plus career wins. Also on Friday, UCLA's talented seniors picked up their 70th career win (2-0 vs. Cal State Northridge), joining North Carolina and Notre Dame as the only current senior classes with 70 or more career victories (UCLA is the only team with 20-plus wins each of the past three seasons).

UCLA (70-7-5; .874) actually owns the second-best win pct. over the past four seasons ('06-'09), narrowly ahead of ND's .871 (76-10-3). UNC's seniors have racked up a .910 career win pct. (79-6-4), including national-title seasons in 2006 and '08.

It's rare to have all members of a senior class in the regular starting lineup, but such is the case for UCLA's current group of five seniors (who have played lead roles in the Bruins outscoring the opposition 203-51 from 2006-09). The class is headlined by U.S. National Team member Lauren Cheney. The Indianapolis native is on her way to becoming a rare four-year All-American and has amassed 116 career points (58G-23A) with the Bruins, with her role this season including duty as both a forward and attacking midfielder (opening a spot up top for UCLA's other talented frontrunners).

Fifth-year senior Kara Lang (left) in 2001 became the youngest player (15) ever to compete with the Canadian National Team.

Two other starting forwards – fifth-year player Kara Lang (Oakville, Ontario) and 2008 leading scorer Kristina Larsen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) – also are seniors, combining this season with Cheney to total 15 goals and six assists between them (Larsen 7G-3A, Cheney 5G-2A, Lang 3G-1A). The senior forward trio combine with sophomore sensation Sydney Leroux (8G-1A) in giving the 2009 Bruins the potential for having four double-digit goalscorers.

Kristina Larsen (left) has emerged as a starter for UCLA this season, after leading the '08 squad with 13 goals (as a part-time starter).

Lang – who missed the '06 season due to a knee injury – has been a member of Canada's full National Team for several years and (like Cheney, in '06) was considered by many to be the nation's top recruit when she began her college career (in '05). Larsen started for UCLA as a freshman and provided an offensive spark as a top reserve/part-time starter in both 2007 and '08 (when she led the team with 13 goals).

Defender Lauren Wilmoth (left) has started all 83 games for UCLA spanning the past four seasons.

On the opposite end of the field, senior defender and 2008 all-Pac 10 Conference performer Lauren Wilmoth (Garland, Texas) has started all 83 of UCLA's games during the past four seasons. Fellow senior Dea Cook (Acampo, Calif.) also has been a four-year starter in the UCLA defense, making 70 starts from '06-'09. Wilmoth and Cook were part of the 2008 Bruins defense that led the nation with a 0.23 season goals-against avg., as UCLA outscored its '08 opponents by a huge 60-6 margin (with 19 shutouts). During the Wilmoth-Cook era, the Bruins defense has allowed only 51 goals spanning 83 total games (0.61 goals allowed per game; 49 shutouts).

Here's the complete updated list of the nation's winningest senior classes, with many of the teams set to return to action on Sunday (Texas A&M's seniors are one shy of their 60th career win).

Senior-Class Salute – UCLA veterans notch 70th career win (updated thru 9/25 games)

contact: Pete LaFleur, editor@collegesoccer360.com

This update includes Friday's games involving 12 0f the team's listed below (plusNavy's loss on Saturday). The list will be updated later Sat. night (new blog entry), following BYU's game vs. Utah State. Two senior classes – Milwaukee (5-1 vs. Loyola Chicago) and North Texas (2-0 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette) posted their 50th career win on Friday, becoming two of the 22 current senior classes with 50-plus career wins.

Three Unbeaten/Untied Teams Left (also six unbeaten with ties)

Following the past two day's action, there now are only three unbeaten/untied teams  – Boston College, Stanford and South Carolina (all 9-0-0) – remaining from more than 300 in all of D-I women's soccer. Maryland suffered its first loss of the season vs. Florida State on Thursday (0-2), while two others lost for the first time on Friday: Mississippi State (1-5 vs. Auburn) and Chattanooga (0-1 vs. College of Charleston). Louisiana Tech also saw its perfect record come to an end, with a scoreless tie vs. Sam Houston State. Here's the three teams that have yet to lose or tie (all research courtesy of CS360):

9-0-0 ... Boston College  (34-1 scoring ... next game on 9/27 – at Florida State)
9-0-0 ... Stanford  (33-6 scoring ... 9/27 – at St. Mary's)
9-0-0 ... South Carolina  (27-2 scoring ... 9/27 – vs. Kentucky)

There also are six other teams that remain unbeaten but have one or more ties (now nine total teams are unbeaten, three of them with no ties), with two of these teams owning multiple ties:

10-0-1 ... Louisiana Tech  (47-5 scoring ... 9/27 – vs. Houston Baptist)
8-0-1 ... North Carolina  (24-3 scoring ... 9/27 – vs. Wake Forest)
7-0-1 ... Canisius  (20-9 scoring ... 9/27 – vs. Loyola)
6-0-1 ... Samford  (10-0 scoring ... 9/27 – at College of Charleston)

6-0-2 ... Michigan State  (20-3 scoring ... 9/27 – vs. Penn State)
5-0-4 ... Dayton  (16-2 scoring ... 9/27 – at George Washington)

Note – three teams dropped off the no-losses with ties list on Friday: Georgia (0-6 at LSU), New Mexico (1-2 vs. Northern Arizona) and Arkansas (0-1 vs. Tennessee).

contact: Pete LaFleur, editor@collegesoccer360.com

Penn State and BYU Both Playing Tonight

Two teams from the CS360 top-50 Composite National Rankings will be in action today, as Penn State is playing at Bucknell (7 ET) while BYU plays host to Southern Utah (7 MT). Look for periodic updates via the CS360 Twitter feed.

Most teams are clear of midweek non-conference action and are focused on their league slates – including several that begin taking on conference foes tomorrow (Thursday), which thankfully will lessen the number of big games being played on Friday nights.

Updated – and Expanded – CS360 Composite National Rankings

(see Composite Rankings tab for the CS360 rankings page – includes a shorter-version "callout" box of the current CNR top-50)

note: this week's updated Composite National Rankings were delayed a bit due to creating the new formula (also, the new Albyn Jones ratings were posted just as CS360 was about to post the new CNR – so, after another delay, the numbers have been "recrunched" and this CNR is totally up-to-date with the five national polls/ratings now factored into the formula)

WEEK-5 UPDATE – CS360'S UPDATED FORMULA FOR THE CNR (9/23/09) – CollegeSoccer360 introduced Composite National Rankings (CNR) in 2008 and has brought this aggregate poll concept back for 2009. Now that the Albyn Jones statistical ratings have begun, the 2009 formula has been expanded to include five different criteria (each weighted equally): the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) coaches poll, the Soccer America (SA) rankings, the Soccer Times coaches poll (ST), the top-50 in the Top Drawer Soccer NCAA field projection (TDS), and the Albyn Jones statistical-based ratings (AJ). The composite rankings again will be housed on their own page here at CS360 (also posted on the CS360 blog) and gradually will include even more factors, such as official NCAA RPI, other power rankings (i.e. Massey, if available), NCAA Tournament selection criteria, preseason conference polls, etc.

In the latest update of the CS360 Composite National Rankings, Stanford has unseated North Carolina in the #1 spot – with a near-maximum 99.87 points on the CNR 100-point scale – followed by UNC at 99.1. Portland (#2 last week), UCLA and Florida State occupy spots 3-5, with Boston College, California, Wake Forest, Notre Dame and Virginia rounding out the top-10. UCLA (previously #5) moved up two spots, BC dropped down two and FSU bumped up a spot, while WFU and UVa flipped positions. Notre Dame – boosted by a #6 spot in the Albyn Jones – moved up from #11 to #9 in this week's CNR, while Florida dropped out of the top-10 (#9 to #13).

Teams that made the biggest CNR jumps from the previous week include: Kansas (#28 to #16), Ohio State (#35 to #25), Washington (#35 to #29) and Texas A&M (#18 to #12) – while #28 Oregon State is the most noteworthy newcomer to the CNR. Eight teams dropped five spots or more this week in the CNR: Denver (#28 to #46), West Virginia (#21 to #31), Colorado (#33 to #43), USC (#24 to #33), San Diego (#23 to #32), Purdue (#14 to #22), Georgetown (#28 to #35) and Penn State (#34 to #39).

The current CNR top-10 includes five teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (UNC-FSU-BC-WFU-UVa) and three from the Pacific-10 (Stanford, UCLA, Cal), plus the West Coast Conference's Portland and the BIG EAST's Notre Dame. Projecting out hypothetical #1 seeds for the NCAAs (16 total teams) based on this week's CNR, there would be five ACC, three Pac-10, three from the Southeastern Conference (SC-FL-GA), two WCC (also SCU), two Big-12 (A&M-KU) and ND form the BIG EAST.

Notes on CS360's updated Composite National Rankings formula (created by Pete LaFleur) – The CNR for CollegeSoccer360.com now closely resembles the composite rankings on CS360's sister site, CollegeBaseball360.com. The CNR currently consists of an average of five polls/ratings: the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) coaches poll, Soccer America (SA), the Soccer Times coaches poll (ST), the top-25 in the Top Drawer Soccer NCAA field projection (TDS), and the Albyn Jones ratings (AJ). The points total listed below are scaled to a 100-point format, for simplicity's sake.

In the raw formula, a #1-ranked team in any of the five polls/ratings typically receives 60 points, the #2 team gets 59, etc. The Soccer America poll is the most basic in this regard, as it has a top-25 and no "also receiving votes" teams." When two or more teams are tied for one spot, they receive an equal share of the combined points for those spots. Thus, two teams tied for 25th are considered in "25.5th" place, while three teams tied for 25th each are considered as 26th-place (as is the case this week in the SA poll, which has three teams in the #25 spot – they each are considered "#26" and then receive 35 pts for the CNR).

Within the CNR formula, teams in the Top Drawer Soccer projection for the NCAA Tournament receive points if they are among the TDS #1-#50 spots (as spots 51-64 typically are projected automatic qualifiers that likely would not earn at-large bids). The same cutoff is used for the Albyn Jones (#1-#50). In the end, each team can receive a maximum of 60 CNR points from each of the five polls/ratings. That total then is divided by five and 40 is added to yield the final score on a convenient 100-point scale.

One final note: three are three polls/ratings that include voting points (NSCAA and Soccer Times) or "rating points" (AJ). The CNR also takes these "points" into consideration when rating the teams. Essentially, a team's ranking-spot AND its point total receive equal value in the CNR formula – thus allowing for the "voting/point margin" to play a role in comparing the teams. A perfect example showing the value of this criteria can be seen in this week's NSCAA poll, with UNC narrowly holding the top spot (809 voting points, to Stanford's 808). Based solely on ranking-spot in the NSCAA poll, UNC would receive 60 points for the CNR and Stanford 59 ... but, after using the CNR formula, UNC received 59.97 and Stanford 59.45. By comparison, a week earlier UNC was a unanimous #1 in the NSCAA poll (825 pts) and Portland was the #2 team (789) – in the CNR, the Tar Heels would have received the max. 60 points and the Pilots 58.54 (nearly a full point below Stanford's CNR value this week from the NSCAA poll).

The numbers below in parentheses indicate each team's spot in the five polls/ratings, along with the voting or rating points (separated by the slash).

Only Five Teams Have Allowed 0-2 Goals ...

3383391

South Carolina senior goalkeeper Mollie Patton (left) – who has one year of eligibility remaining after 2009 – has not allowed a goal this season (690 minutes/8 starts; team's only goal allowed came vs. backup 'keeper).

South Carolina (6-1 vs. South Alabama) and Chattanooga (4-3 vs. Austin Peay) both allowed goals for the first time this season, in Sunday's action – leaving Samford as the only team in the nation that has yet to be scored upon in the 2009 Division-I women's soccer season. It also appears that Boston College and South Carolina are the only teams that have allowed a single goal, while North Carolina (seven straight shutouts) and Dayton are the teams that have yielded only two goals:

Unscored upon in 2009 (as of Sept. 20 games)
• Samford  (9-0 scoring; 5-0-1 record)

Teams that have allowed 1 goal in 2009
• Boston College  (32-1 scoring ... 8-0-0 record)
• South Carolina  (25-1 scoring ... 8-0-0 record)

Teams that have allowed 2 goals in 2009
• North Carolina  (22-2 scoring ... 7-0-1 record)
• Dayton  (12-2 scoring ... 4-0-0 record)

Six "Big Games" Highlight Friday's Slate

Today's Division I women's soccer schedule features six games between teams currently ranked in the national top-25 polls. The most noteworthy of those top matchups is an in-state showdown, as Florida State (#6 in the CS360 Composite National Rankings) will play at #9 Florida. There are two other tilts in which both teams are in the top-20 of the CNR: #2 Portland at #18 Texas A&M and #20 Central Florida at #12 South Carolina (in a matchup of two upstart squads). There's a total of 26 games today involving top-25/CNR teams (see sidebar), with four CNR teams being idle today: Virginia, Wake Forest, BYU and Penn State.

Here's the full list of today's top-25 "big games" (rankings based on the CNR):

• #23 San Diego at #28 Kansas  (3 CT)
• #6 Florida State at #9 Florida  (7 ET)
• #20 Central Florida at #12 South Carolina  (7 ET)
• #24 USC at #19 Oklahoma State ST  (7 PT)
• #2 Portland at #18 Texas A&M  (7 CT)
• #33 Colorado at #3 Stanford  (7 PT)

There are two other games of note, each involving one team currently in the national rankings and another that was nationally-ranked earlier in the season:

• #1 North Carolina vs. LSU (@Duke; 5 ET)
• Utah at #5 UCLA (7 PT)

Sept.. 15, 2009                                contact: Pete LaFeur (editor@collegesoccer360.com)
CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week #3 (Sept. 8-13)

The second week of September provided many clutch performances from players throughout the nation, with 18 of them honored by CollegeSoccer360.com as the third group of Primetime Performers of the Week.

For this third week of Primetime Performer honorees, CS360 again has selected 18 players (listed at the top of this release), to represent the number on a typical "travel" top-18 squad (the usual number of honorees will be 18). This honoree group includes five forwards, eight midfielders, four defenders and one goalkeeper. They come from 15 different teams (two each from Central Florida, Santa Clara and Stanford) and four of them are California natives, plus two each from Colorado, Florida and New York, along with one each from Brazil, Colorado, England, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Ontario and Texas. The 18 include a rare 6th-year senior, 10 seniors, no juniors, one sophomore and six freshmen.

North Carolina and Stanford each have produced four Primetime Performer honorees spanning the past three weeks, followed by BYU, UCF, Portland and SCU with three each. Santa Clara sixth-year defender Jordan Angeli (also honored the previous week) has joined BYU freshman forward Carlee Payne as players who already have repeated as a Primtetime Performer this season.

Headshots for each of the 18 players (as available) are included in the righthand sidebar and capsule tributes (with action photos) will follow below.

(The setup/template for this page still needs some design/conistency tweaks. CS360 plans to continue announcing the Primetime Performers on Tuesdays, along with the updated Composite National Rankings).

Note: player tribute capsules (with action photos) will be added to this release, on a continuing basis (similar to the past two weeks) ... all photos are courtesy of the various schools and their photographic staffs.

Sunday's Upsets ...

Eight teams posted upset noteworthy wins/ties on Sunday, based on the CS360 Composite National Rankings (CNR). Five of the teams that posted these key wins – Connecticut, Santa Clara, Colorado College, Washington and St. John's – have been ranked previously this season. UConn (#8 Wake Forest) and Santa Clara (#9 Purdue) both registered victories over top-10 teams, while Dartmouth (#12 West Virginia), Colorado College (#16 Kansas) and Washington (#16 Illinois) added wins/ties vs. teams in the top-20. In addition to the teams mentioned above, Penn was the other squad that knocked off a team in the CNR. Here's a look at Sunday's teams that turned in upset wins/ties (rank numbers indicate CNR):

at Connecticut 4,  #8 Wake Forest 2

at Santa Clara 3,  #9 Purdue 1

Dartmouth 1,  #12 West Virginia 0  (@Virginia)

at Colorado College 0,  #16 Kansas 0

#29 Washington 1,  #16 Illinois 0  (@Portland)

at St. John's 2,  #22 Indiana 1

at Marquette 1,  #31 Minnesota 0

at Pennsylvania 2, #34 Pittsburgh 1  (OT)

Senior-Class Salute: USC, Texas & Penn State Seniors Reach 50 Career Wins (updated thru 9/13 games)

contact: Pete LaFleur, editor@collegesoccer360.com

This update includes Sunday's games, which saw three different teams (USC, Texas and Penn State) post their 50th victory spanning the past four seasons while the senior classes from Milwaukee, North Texas and Wake Forest remain one win shy of 50 (and West Virginia still is two wins away from 50). By winning on Sunday, two other teams – Stanford and Florida State – now are one win away from joining North Carolina, Notre Dame, UCLA and Portland among the senior classes with 60-plus career victories. Also of note: by virtue of ND's loss on Sunday and UCLA's win, the Bruins seniors now have a higher career win pct. (.880) than the Irish (.867) despite the fact that ND has six more wins than UCLA over the past four seasons (which is offset by UCLA having three fewer losses, even with two more ties).

Upset Watch (Sept. 9-11)

The past couple weeks have produced a slew of noteworthy upsets and that trend has continued this week, to a somewhat lesser degree. Kudos go out to 11 teams – Central Florida, Santa Clara, West Virginia, San Diego, Denver, Washington State, Missouri, UC Santa Barbara, Miami, Texas Tech and Drexel – that have posted wins/ties over the past few days vs. teams ranked higher in the CS360 Composite National Rankings (CNR). It's worth noting that many of these upset-producing teams (SCU, WVU, USD, WSU, Missouri and Miami) have been ranked higher this season, so this week's results might help push them back up the rankings. Here are the noteworthy upset results, for Sept. 9-11:

• at Central Florida 1, #4 Florida State  (2OT)
• at Santa Clara 2, #7 Notre Dame 0
• #12 West Virginia 1, at #9 Virginia 1
• San Diego 2, #13 Rutgers 1  (@Arizona)
• Denver 2, #16 Kansas 1  (@CC)

• at Washington State 2, #25 BYU 1
• #34 Missouri 2, at #28 Auburn 1
• UC Santa Barbara 2, at #29 William & Mary 0
• Miami 1, #29 Washington 0  (@Portland)
• Texas Tech 3, #34 Vanderbilt 1  (@Auburn)
• at Drexel 1, #34 Pittsburgh 0

Senior-Class Salute (update - thru 9/11/09 games)

This update includes all games from this week (updated through games as of Sept. 10). Following Stanford's win over Purdue (and Florida State's loss to UCF earlier in the week), the Cardinal and Seminole seniors now are tied for the fifth-most career wins (58), as both near the 60-win milestone. Six different teams – Milwaukee, Texas, USC, North Texas, Penn State and Wake Forest (all with 49) – are on the verge of picking up their 50th win over the past four seasons:

Friday Festivities ("big games")

Today's slate features 23 games involving top-25 teams (down from 28 the previous Friday night!), including five "big games." Here's a listing of those top matchups (numbers indicate the CS360 Composite National Rankings), highlighted by co-#9 Purdue taking on #3 Stanford along with three other top-10 teams (#2 Portland, #8 Wake Firest and co-#9 Virginia) that could face tough tests today:

• #8 Wake Forest vs. #20 Penn State (5 ET @UConn)

• #12 West Virginia at #9 Virginia (6 ET)

• #9 Purdue vs. #3 Stanford (5 PT; @Santa Clara)

• #34 Missouri at #28 Auburn (7 CT)
• #16 Illinois at #2 Portland  (7 PT)

There are four other matchups today that would have been classified as "big games," if not for certain teams (San Diego, Duke, Utah and Santa Clara) falling out of the rankings for this week. Nonetheless, these showdowns will be important to watch and the results could have a big impact come NCAA selection time:

• Utah at #23 Colorado (4 MT)
• Duke at #14 Florida (7 ET)
• #7 Notre Dame @Santa Clara (7:30 PT)
• #13 Rutgers vs. San Diego (8 PT; @Arizona)

Later in the day (time permitting), live-game links will be added to the CS360 sidebar scoreboard, as will final scores as they come in along with recap links. Just a reminder that the CS360 Twitter feed (currently viewable on the main page and the blog page) is the best place to check for up-to-the-minute updates, particularly on days with 20-plus games involving top-25 teams (such as today). A total of 28 top-25 teams will be in action today, with the eight that are idle including North Carolina, Florida State, UCLA, Texas A&M, BYU, Maryland (which won on Wed. at American, 1-0), UAB and Georgetown.

Note that UAB's game originally scheduled for yesterday (Sept. 10) vs. Samford was postponed to a later date, due to the memorial service that was being held at Samford for basketball player Jim Griffin, who had died in his sleep Tuesday night after playing a pickup game and weight training.

Senior-Class Salute (update - 9/10/09)

This update includes Thurday's win by Charlotte over Davidson (2-0) and thus are updated through games played on Sept. 10. Plenty of teams will be in action over the next few days (CS630 plans to update this list late Friday night, again on Saturday if needed, and then of course sometime late in the day on Sunday):

CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week #2 (Sept. 2-7)

The past six days in Division I women's college soccer featured some noteworthy performances by players from throughout the country. CollegeSoccer360.com – reocgnizing the need to recognize more top players (in addition to the pre-existing conference and national honors) – has begun a recognition program entitled Primetime Performers of the Week.

• Involved in clutch performances, such as gamewinning goals, noteworthy comebacks, team leadership, etc.

• Performing against a team rated highly nationally (or within its own conference)., with bonus consideration for key performances away from home field.

• Overcoming adversity or extreme circumstances (for the team and/or individual).

For this week, CS360i has selected 19 players (listed at the top of this release), to closely represent the number on a typical "travel" top-18 squad (the usual number of honorees will be 18). This group include eight forwards, three midfielders, six defenders and two goalkeepers. They come from 15 different teams (two each from UNC, Florida State, UCLA and William & Mary) and five of them are California natives, plus two from Indiana and one each from British Columbia, Colorado, Florida, France, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washingon. The 19 include a rare 6th-year senior, five seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen.

Four teams – North Carolina, Stanford, BYU and Arizona State – also had players honored on CS360's inaugural Primetime Performer list, with BYU freshman forward Carlee Payne impressively repeating the honor. UNC and BYU lead all teams with three Primetime Performer honors so far in the young season.

Headshots for each of the 19 players (as available) are included in the righthand sidebar and capsule tributes (with action photos) will follow below (to be added throughout the day).

(The initial setup/template for this page has taken some extra time, and still needs some design/conistency tweaks. CS360 plans to continue announcing the Primetime Performers on Tuesdays, along with the updated Composite National Rankings).

Note: check back to the Awards page later , as player tribute capsules (with action photos) will be added for all 19 players on a continuing basis ... all photos are courtesy of the various schools and their photographic staffs.

Composite National Rankings Update (#4; 9/8/09)

REVOLVING DOOR – FEATURING 53 TEAMS SO FAR IN '09 – CONTINUES IN NATIONAL POLLS (9/8/09) – CollegeSoccer360 introduced composite national rankings in 2008 and here is a look at updated composite rankings for the 2009 season. This composite sampling is a simple formula, taking into acount four polls/rankings and crediting 25 points for a #1 ranking, 24 for #2, etc. (for a convenient 100-point scale). The four polls used are from the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA), Soccer America (SA), the Soccer Times coaches poll (ST) and the top-25 in the Top Drawer Soccer NCAA field projection (TDS). The composite rankings again will be housed on their own page here at CS360 (also posted on the CS360 blog) and gradually will include more factors, such as RPI, power rankings (Albyn Jones and Massey), NCAA Tournament selection criteria, preseason conference polls, etc.

As we look at the third in-season update for the CNR, the 2009 season thus far can be  summed up in one number: 53. That's how many different teams have cycled through the four national polls this season (including 48 in the past two weeks alone!).

There now are a total of 36 teams ranked among the top-25 in at least one of the four polls mentioned above, led by six from the Atlantic Coast Conference (UNC, FSU, BC, Wake, UVa and Maryland) and the Big Ten (Penn State, Illinois, Purdue, Michigan State, Minnesota and Indiana), plus five each from four different conferences: the Big 12 (A&M, KU, OK St., CU and  Missouri), the BIG EAST (ND, WVU, Rutgers, Georgetown and Pittsburgh), the Pacific-10 (Stanford, UCLA, Cal, USC and Washington) and the Southeastern Conference (Florida, Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina and Vanderbilt).

All but four of the 36 teams in the current CNR are affiliated with one of the six conferences noted above. The final four teams include Portland (West Coast Conference), BYU (Mountain West), William & Mary (Colonial) and UAB (Conference USA).

The CNR's current top-10 now includes half of those teams coming from the ACC (#1 UNC, #4 FSU, #6 BC, #8 WFUand #9 UVa), plus two from the Pac-10 and one each from the WCC, BIG EAST and Big Ten. Projecting the 16 top seeds for the NCAAs (based on the current CNR), there would be five from the ACC, three Big Ten, three Pac-10, two BIG EAST, and one each from the Big 12, SEC and WCC.

In the latest update of the CS360 Composite National Rankings, North Carolina remains a near-unanimous #1 (99 pts) while Florida State (#4), Boston College (#7) and Virginia (#9) all moved up a spot, along with UCLA bumping up from #9 to #6. Two teams entered the top-10: #8 Wake Forest (up from #13) and #9 Purdue (previously #15), with West Virginia (#7 to #12) and Florida (#5 to #14) dropping into the second-10.

In addition to Purdue, the noteworthy surges in the CS360 CNR came from: Kansas (#35 to #16), Rutgers (#23 to #13), California (#18 to #11) and Georgia (#27 to #20).

A boatload of teams (12) that were ranked in the previous week's CNR have dropped out of the polls: San Diego (#21), Utah (22), Texas (26), St. John's (27), DePaul (30), Miami (33), Santa Clara (33), Colorado College (350, Dayton (35), Duke (38), Memphis (38) and Washington State (38). Other teams that suffered the biggest drops (but remain in the CNR) include: Missouri (#25 to #34), Penn State (#12 to #20), USC (#20 to #27) and Colorado (#16 to #23).

Following a second straight week of numerous upsets, eight more teams have joined/rejoined the Composite National Rankings: Indiana (#22), South Carolina (23), Maryland (26), Washington (back in, at #29), William & Mary (29), UAB (32), Pittsburgh (34) and Vanderbilt (34).

Despite the season being only three weeks old, there have been more than 50 teams (53) that have been ranked already in at least one of the four top-25 polls. Those teams include the 48 mentioned above, plus LSU, James Madison, Connecticut, Tennessee and Richmond.

Senior-Class Salute (update - 9/6/09)

CollegeSoccer360.com recently began conducting research to highlight the winningest senior classes currently in Division I women's soccer, based on their four-year records from 2006-09. The CS360 blog featured this list earlier in the week and it now is updated below, to include games through Sept. 6, 2009.

Portland's win on Sunday (5-1 vs. Columbia) gives the Pilots 60 wins spanning the past four seasons, joining North Carolina, Notre Dame and UCLA as the only programs with 60-plus wins from 2006-09. William & Mary's win on Sunday at Utah (3-1) leaves the Tribe seniors one win shy of 50 victories in their career (Milwaukee, Penn State and West Virginia all lost on Sunday, with each remaining one win away from 50 for the '06-'09 span).

See the CS360 "Historical Archive" link for a list of the winningest senior classes in D-I women's soccer history (the current UNC seniors could finish with a max. of 98 career wins, which would tie for the fourth-most in D-I w-soccer history and most since the 1999 UNC seniors wrapped up their 101-4-1 career record).

(Look for a upcoming CS360 blog posting that will highlight the current UNC seniors.)

Sunday's 14 Noteworthy Upsets ...

Congrats go out to 14 teams – Santa Clara, UCLA, Rutgers, Long Beach State, Western Carolina, Princeton, Boston University, Drake, Ohio State, Oregon, William & Mary, Navy, Washington and Arizona State – that were able to post a victory or tie today versus a higher-ranked team (based on the CS360 Composite National Rankings, or CNR). One of the more noteworthy results came from Long Beach State, which went on the road and posted a convincing 4-1 win at Missouri (the #25 team in the CNR).

Six of the teams (Santa Clara, Rutgers, Long Beach, Oregon, William & Mary and Navy) registered their positive result while playing on the opponent's field, while three others (UCLA, Western Carolina and Ohio State) did so on a neutral field. Three of the games involved a top-10 team that was beaten/tied by a unranked or lower-ranked team: #9 UCLA 3, #6 Florida 0 (@Illinois); Boston University 0, at #7 West Virginia 0; and @Arizona 1, #10 Virginia 1. There was a total of 30 games today involving teams ranked in at least one of the national top-25 polls – and nearly half of those games (14) saw the higher-ranked team lose or tie.

Another Busy Sunday ...

Quick reminder that – on days when there are a lot of top-25 teams in action – the best way to track scores is via the Twitter feed (at left, also bottom of right sidebar as non-flash option that also shows the past 20 posts ... on the flash-feed, you can scroll down to see the past 20 tweets).

There are 40 teams currently ranked in at least one of the four top-25 polls – and all but five of those teams (Oklahoma State, Purdue, BYU, Duke and Auburn) are in action today. There are 30 total games today involving top-25 teams, most notably five "big games" with top-25 teams facing each other.
