The Blue Devils scored all of their goals in the first half, with the first goal coming when senior Elisabeth Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) chipped a 15-yard shot over freshman goalkeeper Samantha Ruppert in the 30th minute (Duke's 'keeper, freshman Tara Campbell, was credited with an assist on the play). Just 76 seconds later, senior forward Kayanne Gummersall (Wilmette, Ill.) beat Ruppert on a 1-v-1 chance (assisted by sophomore Cody Newman and senior Jane Alukonis) for the 2-0 lead and the 24th goal in Gummersall's Duke career.
The cushion grew to three goals 44 seconds before halftime, as Gummersall headed in a Redmond corner kick for her second goal of the half (and 25th of her career). Duke dominated the run of play with a 36-4 shot edge (16-1 in shots on goal) and all 12 corner kicks in the game. It will be interesting to see what type of season Duke put together, after making solid strides in the past few seasons and now being led by veteran offensive stars such as Redmond and Gummersall (both of whom earned first team all-ACC honors in 2008).
Elisabeth Redmond (above) scored twice in the win over Gardner Webb, giving her 25 goals in her Duke career.
